US50 Mural Project: Community Selection Results


Voting Results

We received an outstanding community response with 1,868 votes cast by the April 25 deadline. This remarkable level of participation demonstrates the community's strong interest in this project and will be highlighted in our submission to Safeway Corporate.


Of those votes:

  • Only 14 votes were received to keep the wall as is
  • The winner is Choice #3 submitted by Tejae Floyde.


Our path forward includes:


  1. Meeting with Tajae to finalize all submission details for Safeway Corporate
  2. Preparing comprehensive documentation
  3. Submitting the complete package to Safeway Corporate for review
  4. Upon approval, mobilizing as a community to bring this vision to reality

We've received wonderful design concepts for our community mural project, and we're excited to move forward with the voting process. Thank you to everyone who took the time to submit a proposal!

Submissions are published in the order they were received. 


Important Information About the Submissions & Voting Process

Viewing the Submissions

  • Website Image Limitations: Please note that the website has technical limitations regarding image size. Any pixelation you see is due to these limitations and does not reflect the quality of the original submissions. Please consider each design concept as a whole.
  • Design Flexibility: Remember that these are design concepts, and modifications are possible for the winning mural.


Voting Timeline & Process

  • Voting Period: April 16-25, 2025 - The process is being worked out and will be announced shortly.
  • Goal: To achieve community consensus and broad participation.
  • Current Wall Option: For those who prefer to keep the current wall as is, this will be included as a voting option.


Including Youth Voices

We especially want to include young people in this decision-making process. Teachers: If you work at any local school, please contact us about how we can facilitate student participation in the voting process.


After Voting

  • The winning design will be proposed to Safeway Corporate
  • The local store director is already informed and involved in this process


Budget Considerations

  • Different murals have different budget requirements
  • Budget is not a factor in the voting process
  • We will vote based on design merit and community preference
  • This mural will be visible from a major highway that traverses America - its impact will be significant.

The Opportunity

US 50 Mural Project – Celebrating America’s Highway

Turning a Wall into a Landmark for Canon City!

Thousands of cars pass by the large back wall of Safeway along US Highway 50 in Canon City, Colorado every day. This is our opportunity to turn it into something iconic—a community-designed mural that celebrates the journey of US 50 across America and our town’s unique place on it.

Now accepting submissions until April 10!

The Vision

US Highway 50 stretches over 3,000 miles, crossing 12 states and the District of Columbia. It begins in Ocean City, Maryland, runs through Washington, D.C., St. Louis, the Rocky Mountains, Nevada’s “Loneliest Road”, and ends in Sacramento, California. This mural will reflect the historic journey of America’s Highway while capturing the identity of Canon City and Fremont County.
